Frigid, dry winter air – the kind that dries out the skin and seems to breeze through even the thickest coat – can be tough on hair. It lacks humidity and hydration which can leave hair dehydrated and brittle. Color-treated styles may prove even more susceptible to winter problems such as dryness, split ends, static, and breakage. So how do you maintain the health of your hair during the winter months? These 4 hair care tips will help defend your hair from even the iciest elements and driest indoor heating:
1. Wash hair less
Limit washing your hair to 2-3 times per week, if possible. Over-shampooing can strip your hair of its natural moisture and lead to increased dandruff and split-ends.
2. Hair oil or conditioner
A leave-in conditioner or hair oil – such as the pictured Moroccanoil Treatment containing 100% argan oil – can help restore your hair’s hydration and make it more resilient to the elements.
3. Put on a hat or scarf
This one goes with not leaving the house with wet hair. Tie a hat or put on a scarf before bracing the outside elements. You can reduce static and further damage by trying a hat lined with satin or silk.
4. Use a humidifier
Manufactured indoor heating can create further havoc on hair that suffers from dryness or brittleness. Humidifiers emit water vapors and steam, putting moisture back into the air. Your hair will thank you later!
